The Bi-annual Site One Holy Loch Reunion for 2011 was held May 12-15, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Each morning we were treated with a breakfast of eggs, cereals, juices, and coffee.

After breakfast Friday morning, we all boarded a bus for a riding tour of the Norfolk Navy Base, and downtown Norfolk. We disembarked our bus on the Norfolk waterfront where we boarded the Spirit of Norfolk for lunch and entertainment along with a cruise of Norfolk harbor. Lunch was laid out in buffet style with a wide variety of food and drink. Before, during and after lunch, entertainment was provided by the ships wait staff and the resident disc jockey where audience participation was encouraged. During the cruise, we cruised throughout Norfolk harbor as well as along the Naval Base where many ships were docked including two well known ships; the USS New York (LPD-21) and the USS Cole (DDG-67). After the cruise we returned to the hotel where our evening was free. Most people either took advantage of this free time to rest or talk with shipmates in the hospitality room where the ships store was setup and light snacks and liquid refreshments were available.

Saturday morning we again boarded our bus for a trip to Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, Virginia. In Williamsburg, for those who desired, a guided walking tour of the area was made available; while those that did not want to participate headed towards Merchants Square where shopping took place as well as the weekly Farmer’s Market. Following Williamsburg, we all had a box lunch while on a riding tour of Yorktown and Jamestown, some of the earliest settlements in the new world. It was really a ride into the past as much of this area has been preserved for current and future generations and beautifully maintained by the National Park Service. After these tours, we were taken back to the hotel for rest and relaxation until the Site One Ball Saturday evening.

Saturday evening, and the Ball, highlighted this Reunion. The major highlight was an18 piece United States Navy Fleet Forces Ceremonial Band stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base and a color guard from the Princess Anne High School Junior NROTC. The Band played various patriotic songs and music that inspired us all. They were absolutely terrific and made me proud to be a US Navy alumnus. After the band departed, a DJ provided the musical entertainment for the remainder of the evening.

Sunday was departure day for all attendees with good-byes along with fair winds and following seas. In summary, a good time was had by all. See you in Scotland in 2013.
